Literature Reviews

The Board has voted to make available on the NAOEM website a series of literature reviews focused on the causation of injuries. Our current President, Paula Lantsberger, MD, MPH, FACOEM, has compiled a series of literature reviews on a variety of occupations and medical conditions. Dr. Lantsberger wants these literature reviews to be available to all the members of the NAOEM for use in their clinical practices. Frequently, claims managers for Labor and Industry and self-insured companies ask the attending provider on a claim to support their opinion with references from the literature. It is difficult and time-consuming for a busy practitioner to do detailed research on causation literature.

Currently, the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation, Second Edition, is a decade old, and some of the reviews are becoming outdated with newer research. The causation literature cited in Dr. Lantsberger’s causation reviews attempts to provide a review of articles from more recent scholarly journals. As a sole provider without a research staff,  Dr. Lantsberger cannot provide the depth of review that the AMA Causation guides are able to formulate. However, without a new edition of the Guides, these are intended to be a support for the practitioner to review the more recent literature regarding work-related causation of different medical conditions.
